CARING FOR GEMS & JEWELLERY

Caring for Your Gems.

Some simple guidelines will help Protect your gems from discoloration and chipping . This will allow you and your predecessors to enjoy them and also enhance the value of your gems.

Gems have different hardness e.g. Sapphires on the Mohs scale of hardness is 9 and Quartz [Amethysts, Citrines, Agate] is 7. If the gems of different hardness touch each other, the Sapphires will scratch the Quartz. To avoid this, gems must be kept in different boxes.

Some Gems have a property termed 'Cleavage'. If the gem is subject to pressure like a fall or rubbing against another gem, in certain directions [also mentioned as a fracture direction]it can chip easily. Diamonds and Topazes are highly susceptible to this. Care must be taken when storing these gemstones.

To enhance the color of gemstones, they are subject to treatments like irradiation[White Topaz changed to Blue],color inducement as in Turquoise. These gems must never be exposed to direct heat as they undergo a unpleasant color change.

Though Pearls cannot be categorized as gems, they are considered as very fine Gem Material. They are organic and have to be treated gently. They must be allowed to breathe and must not be kept in plastic bags. To retain their luster they can be washed gently in warm soapy water and dried in a shady place. To further protect them, keep them in soft cotton bags.

Unfortunately due to its sensitivity it tends to tarnish when it comes in contact with our sweat, perfumes, chlorine and other impurities in the air.

Wash it regularly with warm soapy water regularly. Silver can be washed also with hot water in which a detergent like Fab or Bubble is added. Brush gently with a old soft toothbrush. Be careful not to scratch the metal.
